The Mart offers itself to the public as a cultural laboratory: its exhibitions, study and research activities are all closely inter-connected. The 20th century is narrated through artworks, historical documents, the personal items of artists and new tools to explore further. The 20th-century Archive and Library play a fundamental role within the Museum. They contain more than 45 personal artists’, architects’ and art critics’ collections, with tens of thousands papers, manuscript texts, drawings, photographs, press cuttings and libraries.

 

The CIM (Catalogo Integrato del Mart) is an open access database that supplies informations on the collections. All contens are in italian.

Fondo Archivio di Nuova Scrittura (ANS) (New writing archive)
(documents dating from 1963 onwards; with some documents from 1913)

The collection contains the documentation produced and gathered together by the Archivio di Nuova Scrittura in Milan, founded by Paolo Della Grazia in collaboration with Ugo Carrega. Along with the documents concerning the Archive’s activities, the collection also contains over 100 dossiers dedicated to as many artists, principally those working with words and images.

With the Della Grazia long-term loan, over 10,000 books and pamphlets entered the Mart’s library, together with over 500 periodicals covering studies in words and images. Because of its range and complexity, it has been divided into several sections: the historic artistic avant-garde movements, Futurism, illustrated books, artists’ books, studies in words and images in book form, studies in words and images in pamphlet form, periodicals.

Sorelle Angelini Collection
(documents from the latter half of the 19th century to 1942, plus some other documents up to 1991)

The collection focuses on the bond between Filippo Tommaso Marinetti and the Angelini sisters, his “faithful maids” and the role they played in supporting Futurism. The papers mainly include the correspondence with Marinetti, with Giacomo Balla, Francesco Cangiullo, Fortunato Depero and other Futurists.

The bibliographical collection – about 20 elements – includes dossiers of periodicals containing articles by and about Marinetti, Futurish manifestos and books by other Futurists, including Piedigrotta (1916) and Caffeconcerto (1919) di Cangiullo. It also includes edition no. 5 of 12th February, 1916, of “Vela latina” with two parolibere plates by Marietta, and a pamphlet in memory of Nina (Milan, 1926).

Luciano Baldessari collection
(documents from 1919 to 1982; with some additional material up to 1995)

The documentary material highlights the significance of Luciano Baldessar in the field of 20th-century Italian architecture, for his responsiveness to the stimulus of the European avant-garde movements and personal vocation for an interdisciplinary approach to the arts.

The book collection – around 1300 items, comprising books and pamphlets – focuses mainly on the second half of the 20th century, with an ample section dedicated to architecture, a personal bibliography, art books, literature and music.

Carlo Belli collection
(documents from 1909 to 1989; with some additional material up to 1997)

The documentary material reflects the vast range of Belli’s interests and the breadth of his contacts, the role he played in promoting abstract art and contemporary architecture in Italy, and his intellectual contribution as journalist, critic, musicologist, composer and amateur archaeologist.

The book collection, which is currently being catalogued, consists of about 7000 volumes and pamphlets, many of which with autograph inscriptions by the authors, revealing the network of relations maintained by Belli with exponents of Italian culture of the period.

Mirella Bentivoglio papers
(documents from 1966 to 2006)

Bentivoglio was an exponent of written and visual art and a poetess. The papers have arrived together with a group of works donated by the artist, and document the work of some artists active since the 1960s.

Silvio Branzi collection
(documents from the start of the 20th century to 1976; with some additional material up to 1981)

The documents mainly consist of photographic and printed material relative to the work of Italian and foreign artists, especially contemporary ones; of artistic movements in given geographical areas; and of exhibitions and museum collections.

The books were donated after the death of Silvio Branzi, an art critic, to the city of Trento which sent them to the Museo Provinciale d’Arte at the Castello del Buonconsiglio. With the creation of the contemporary section of the Mart at the Palazzo delle Albere, the collection formed the first nucleus of the new institution’s library, around which it first arranged its activities, with its comprehensive collections of the catalogues of the Galleria del Cavallino in Venice, the Galleria del Naviglio in Milan, the Venice Biennali from 1895 to 1972 and other exhibition catalogues, essays and art magazines. It comprises about 500 books and pamphlets.

Duilio Cambellotti collection

The Duilio Cambellotti collection documents the artist’s activities in numerous fields, from illustration to decoration, set design to painting and sculpture to advertising design. The collection above all contains papers concerning his professional projects, photographs and correspondence.

These are two holdings containing the documentation associated with the literary, artistic, social and political activities of Carli and Dessy.

Carlo Carrą collection
(documents from 1912 to 1966; with some additional material up to 1988)

The collection highlights the importance of Carlo Carrà’s painted and critical work from the moment he joined the Futurist movement, and the encouragement of a general renewal of Italian painting.

Biblioteca

The library of 126 books is set chronologically between 1912 and 1996. It consists of a bibliography of the artist, and through the catalogues of personal exhibitions, documents the fortune critique of Carrà’s painting after the Second World War. Among the title dating from the Futurist period is the catalogue of the second exhibition of Der Sturm in 1912 and Guerrapittura in 1915.

Giannina Censi Collection
 

The collection documents Censi’s experience as Futurist “performer”, able to express F.T. Marinetti’s parolibere and E. Prampolini’s aereopitture with just her body, and stresses the link between the Italian avant-garde and the general renewal of the choreographic and plastic language of the international avant-garde movements.

This contains a small group of books about choreography belonging to the dancer, including a bibliography of articles published in magazines in the 1970s and 1980s covering the rediscovery of Censi’s significance within the historic avant-garde movements.

Gaetano Ciocca collection
(documents from the last quarter of the 19th century to 1966)

The holding documents the many activities of Gaetano Ciocca, engineer, inventor and essayist, and the breadth of his technical knowledge and cultural interests. The documents include his notes and texts of various sorts, drawings, photographs and correspondence.

Among the 181 volumes in the collection, there is a professional section, with the engineer’s writings, texts covering mathematics, physics, construction methods and essays on traffic, transport, economics, and a family collection, with 19th-century editions of Greek and Latin classics and 20th-century narrative literature.

The collection above all comprises small-format photographs, which were at least in part taken by Quirino De Giorgio himself. They document the realisation of about 80 architectural projects dating from the 1920s to the 1960s; some his, some by other architects.

Alfredo Degasperi library

Twenty-five books that used to belong to Alfredo Degasperi (1891-1974), a Trentino-born freelance journalist, founder of the weekly “Italia alpina” and editor of the daily “Il Brennero”, who in the 1920s was a friend of Depero and close to the Futurist movement. These are editions dating from the first two decades of the 20th century, except for one from 1940; almost of them Futurist.

Paolo Della Grazia Collection – Living Theatre papers
(documents from 1977 to 1987)

The collection principally comprises the correspondence between Julian Beck of the Living Theatre and Argento, an actor. It also includes photographs, drawings for theatre costumes, a script and a series of 27 audio registrations of performances at the Living Theatre.

Paolo Della Grazia Collection - Collection of frontispieces and prints
(first half 15th century - first half 19th century)

The collection contains 33 frontispieces and prints, six woodcuts and etchings, extracted from books published between 1564 and 1829. There is also a manuscript page from a 15th-century livre d’or.

Liliana Dematteis Library

On long-term loan to the Mart since 2007, Liliana Dematteis’s collection of artists’ books whose passion for artists’ books is linked to the activity of the Galleria Martano in Turin, which she directed from 1965, and is one of the most representative in Italy.
It counts almost 1000 books produced from the 1950s to the 2000s, through which it is possible to explore the birth and development of this expressive medium, used and favoured by many artists. Among these artists, to mention only those in the collection, are Yves Klein, Bruno Munari, Edward Ruscha, Vincenzo Agnetti, Alighiero Boetti, Giorgio Griffa, Ketty La Rocca, Maurizio Nannucci, Ettore Spalletti and Marina Abramovič.

The archive of Tullia Denza, a collector, is mainly made up of about 100 dossiers dedicated to the same number of international visual poetry artists, together with a collection of tapes with recordings of Sound Poetry, and some artists’ films.

Fortunato Depero collection
(documents from 1894 to 1960; with some additional material up to 1970)

The papers paint an image of a multi-faceted artist involved on various fronts and areas of experimentation, from painting to motorumoristi three-dimensional artworks, graphic works, poetry and advertising architecture, opera to set design for the theatre and publishing projects.

The nucleus of about 200 books belonging to Fortunato Depero, which directly concern his activity as artist and his relations with the Futurist movement, formed the basis for the Library of the Museo Depero which, when it entered the Mart, counted about 2000 articles, mainly associated with Futurism, given as gifted by former friends and collaborators, in exchanges with other institutions or purchased.
