"With his research, which has touched all media in parallel, without sacrificing any of them and seeking what could be experimented with not within a specific language but among languages, Baruchello bears witness to a different story."
Carla Subrizi
At the Mart an extensive exhibition devoted to the experiences of a major protagonist of contemporary art

D

eveloped in collaboration with Gianfranco Baruchello (Livorno 1924), the exhibition retraces the pursuit of an artist who ventured beyond the traditional confines of art, questioning cultural systems and conventions.
An experimenter in techniques and idioms, Baruchello began his quest in the late 1950s, rethinking the pictorial medium, practicing juxtaposition, assemblage, and writing. Remaining independent of the main trends of the period, in his long career Baruchello has enjoyed intellectual relationships and friendships with major cultural figures such as Jean-François Lyotard, Alain Jouffroy and Italo Calvino.
In constant dialogue with the innovative thinking of Marcel Duchamp, his exploration of new forms of expression ranges from paintings on various supports to the creation of box-objects, and from the editing of films to the performance of actions and projects on the environmental scale.

The exhibition traces out an itinerary through Baruchello’s principal nuclei. In addition to the famous plexiglass works and numerous paintings, also to be highlighted are over 200 drawings, most of which never previously exhibited, some works of large dimensions and two works specially created for the exhibition. The dream, a central theme of Baruchello’s research, is one of the leitmotifs of the exhibition. Here the relationship between the real dimension and the dimension of dreams is explored according to a special methodology adopted jointly by the artist and the curator.

The exhibition is curated by Gianfranco Maraniello in collaboration with Fondazione Baruchello.
