Since 1987, the year Mart was founded, the museum’s collections, originating from the Autonomous Provice, the Trento City Council and the Rovereto City Council, have grown considerably thanks to careful acquisitions, important bequests and long-term loans.

Over 12,000 paintings, drawings, prints and sculptures today constitute Mart’s rich holdings.
Some of the over 3,000 works by Fortunato Depero, donated by the artist to the town of Rovereto and today entrusted to the museum, constitute one of the most important sectors of Mart’s main site, together with the holdings of works by other Futurists, including Giacomo Balla, Francesco Cangiullo, Carlo Carrà, Luigi Russolo, Gino Severini, Enrico Prampolini, Thayaht and Tullio Crali.

Italian twentieth-century art is represented by works from the Giovanardi collection, among them masterpieces by Osvaldo Licini, Mario Sironi, Massimo Campigli, Filippo de Pisis, again Carlo Carrà, and an important group of paintings by Giorgio Morandi.

The museum’s valuable collection also comprises works by Gino Severini, Giorgio de Chirico, Alberto Savinio, and Felice Casorati.

Abstract and informal art is represented by Fausto Melotti, Lucio Fontana, Alberto Burri, Afro,Toti Scialoja, Gastone Novelli, Emilio Vedova, Antonio Sanfilippo, and Carla Accardi, besides paintings and sculptures by numerous other outstanding Italian artists.

Mart exhibits the most important italian collection on Pop Art and Minimal Art. Thanks to a loan by Ileana Sonnabend's, the museum has on displays works by Andy Warhol, Robert Rauschenberg, Claes Oldenburg, Roy Lichtenstein, Jim Dine, and Tom Wesselman - all from the Ileana Sonnabend collection of New York.

In the section of the museum devoted to contemporary art, the Panza di Biumo collection comprises works by the foremost American artists of the 1980s and 1980s

In recent years, a systematic endeavour to expand the Mart’s collection has led to the acquisition of works by artists engaged in the most advanced inquiry of the 1970s and 1980s, among them Alighiero Boetti, Mario Merz, Giulio Paolini, Salvatore Scarpitta and Jannis Kounnelis, while contemporary international art is outstandingly represented by Bruce Naumann, Arnulf Rainer, Hermann Nitsch, Anselm Kiefer, Richard Long, Andreas Gursky and Candida Höfer.

Mart’s holdings

There are 35,000 cards covering the archive’s holdings, and 7,000 – all supplied with im-ages – covering the paintings, sculptures, drawings, installations and every other work of art to be found in the museum’s collections; furthermore, there are 30,000 cards for the books in the rich art library.
