Almost eight years after the inauguration of the Mart’s main venue at Rovereto, whose new and welcoming architecture has since hosted an intense series of exhibition programmes, the museum pays tribute to its architect, Mario Botta, who produced the design in collaboration with engineer Giulio Andreolli. The exhibition documents the most significant works realised by Botta, who was born at Mendrisio in 1943 and graduated in Venice, ranging from his early family homes, original expressions of the Ticinese school to the major public buildings, libraries, theatres, museums, churches and synagogues built throughout the world.

The architectural itinerary of Mario Botta, whose origins lie in the interpretation of the tradition of the Modern Movement and who continued through the years without surrendering this line, appears today as a “raison critique” with respect to the fragility of models and fashions offered by globalisation.

In his Lugano studio, the Ticinese architect designs buildings that find their raison d’être in the awareness of interpreting the sensitivity of contemporary culture and at the same time evoking that corpus of history and memory that constitutes the true heritage of the identity of European architecture. Present and past live together within a figurative language formed of geometry and materials, without a trace of historical nostalgia or technological waywardness. In this way, architecture regains its early vocation of essential form modelling the spaces in which people live and which, respecting the functions to which they must respond, aspire to offer fresh emotions.
In the exhibition, it will be possible to study and admire about 60 projects for buildings that have been realised, documented with original sketches and models, photographs and drawings in an original exhibition layout organised into 12 sections: from the Incontri (Meetings) representing a veritable introduction to the exhibition, with works and echoes of artists and works that have left a profound mark in the architect’s development, to the most recent projects for major urban spaces. The last section is dedicated to the creations of designer objects and interior design projects.
